O'Reilly cancels 'Videoblog Hacks' book
We get word that the Videoblogging Hacks book was cancelled, allegedly becauase it was too risky financially.

Some very talented people have worked on this project, and they are the same people that motivate a hell of a lot of people to vlog.

Quick, someone call Wiley!

Bonus: Yes, it's true, I'm working on the Podcast Notebook; the Videoblog Notebook; and a How-to-teach-this-stuff kind of book---all three notebooks are unaffiliated with my fellow videobloggers or podcasters, as well as any publisher at this time.
BitTorrent for Dummies book coming next week
Next week, BitTorrent for Dummies comes out, written by Susannah Gardner and my personal celebrity photographer (heh), Kris Krug. What's even cooler is that I get a review copy. Perfect timing! ;-)
So THIS is what the Green Screen was for

PR University panel podcast and nifty soundbite
Eric Schwartzman over at Spinfluencer cited a quote I said during the Podcasting Panel at PR University a few weeks ago: "The popularity of a particular podcast is its success and demon all rolled up into one."

Read his highlights of the panel (Eric moderated, btw) or get the panel's podcast.
Missing Duke
I'm off to Duke University to speak at the Podcasting Symposium this week with some new and familiar faces.

Due to some unforseen circumstances, I'll not be able to attend at Duke this week. However, there are some mighty capable comrades representin'! -ER
Videoblog Panel @ Webzine 2005
I never get sick of hearing "CVS Pharmacy" uttered by Chris Weagel. Bre, Rene, and Zadi are on the panel showing the montage video shown at many of the Meet The Vloggers events. Schlomo is moderating.

Also, I just met Carlton Sloan in person. Check the Del.icio.us bookmarks for today.

Ian Mills is getting big laughs from the audience. Ian rocks!

And wrapping up on Verdi's you-cant-do-shit-about-it meme, the crowd applauds wildly!
Webzine is one of those conferences that matter
Why? Because people come READY TO DO STUFF. It's very indie and with indie comes motivation. Although you still can't escape people asking the question, "How do you make money?" Heh.

Day one is over, and what a wonderful cross section of backgrounds and skillsets amongst the crowd.

Also, it was nice to see lots of people I *didn't* know in the audience (unlike most blogger confs), as well as some surprise folks. I was getting ready for my presentation and Amber Mac snuck up on me. Whoa! San Francisco is a long way from Toronto, eh?

I was reasonably pleased with my Podcasting 101 workshop although not my best. Wifi (as usual at conferences) was a little flaky, so physically uploading audio didn't happen. I tried to tap into the newbie and some advanced issues, while debunking some myths about podcasting and such. My self-given grade? B minus, prolly cuz I'm freaked out about the Duke University symposium next week.

Tomorrow is Day Two and I can't wait. It's the day for videoblogging! Woo!

Bonus trivia: Phil Torrone's new nickname is 'Angelina'. Heh. Inside jokes are so rad.
Village Voice on WebJay's Lucas Gonze
Great article on musicians taking charge, that mentions our favorite playlist visionary Lucas Gonze, creator of WebJay.

I use WebJay to power one of the KSSX podcasts, the KSSX Mixtape (currently not available in iTunes), the show we had to create because SO many bands kept asking us to play stuff on other shows. We needed an overflow show because we refuse to turn anyone away. The KSSX Mixtape is our third show that is a member of AMP, (the association of music podcasting).

Great work, Lucas!

Well, it was easier than I thought--- having my profile on MySpace converted to that of a Band, not a person. So, now there's all this new functionality and fun stuff to do. After all, podcasting is sorta like being in a band, natch.

I have no idea where they inherited the love of the camera. Maybe they picked it up in the street or from gangs or something.

Either way, there's a webcam in the studio now and it posts to my blog's main page.

And the children are burning off tons of energy jumping up and down in front of the camera watching the TV monitors.

I could get USED to this nighttime ritual. ;-)
Old Phrase "Stuck On Stupid" makes for great geek speak
Everytime you have a slow website, a spinning beach ball, or an hourglass, you can take the old phrase that's the New Black and say that it's Stuck on Stupid. Or, if you're a General, throw it at reporters in a press conference.
Put down the crack pipe, Lifehacker.
Apparently we're almost to the point that we'll need a license or certification to comment on blogs... I mean after all, Lifehacker has manifesto'd guidelines on how to comment on blogs.

So, um, thanks for that.

Of course, if you have a blog or blog network that doesn't allow comments (direct HINT here), well, then, I guess the only thing you can do is sit down in a corner and shut the fuck up, whilst we sit over here, laughing at you and pointing.

Trade: Wordpress.com invite for a Flock invite
First person to send an invite to Flock gets a Wordpress.com invite. Sounds reasonable, methinks.
"Butt color is not an indicator of culpability"
Don't ask, it was just one of those phrases that came out tonight while discussing cigarette butts on the ground. Yeah. That.

Thanks, Sean!
Avast! It's September 19th. And ye know that that means...

Apple vs. KSSX
KSSX is getting ready to unveil a new site design and the addition of yet another great podcast of live music from the Podcast Hotel Podcast Jams event. KSSX is a rapidly growing network of original talk and music programming, as well as quality content from our affiliates.

Of course, as I've been screaming about for months, Apple's iTunes Group is silent on all fronts--- from their recent non-reply-able error message emails to any practical way to send feedback about issues and concerns with the Podcasting directory. Several of our podcasts and video podcasts are routinely submitted and added nearly overnight.

All except the KSSX music family of podcasts. Weeks upon weeks upon weeks have gone by. Nothing. I have no confidence that the Podcast Jams Live! podcast will be added, regardless of the success and visibility of the event, as well as the plans for subsequent events and promotions.

I'd like to note that the KSSX Ringtones Podcast was added after a couple days, for what I believe to have been a close analysis of the podcast, which is not music, but voice clips from our family of shows. The keyword "ringtones" must have triggered some alarms. I have no data, therefore, I will assume.

All I want to know is why. I need a support contact, a PR contact, ANYone to give me any hint of insight on why these shows, all members of the Association of Music Podcasting (added to iTunes after they published a press release on the matter), are not being added to the Podcast directory.

As I am an individual who travels and speaks on podcasting; as an individual who is part of the leading podcast creation and publishing service; and as an individual who manages and hosts a number of podcasts, I regret that these unanswered concerns are added to my conversations online and off, in the press, and unfortunately, to customers, listeners, and stakeholders.

My contact info is readily availble on this site and my office is only 30 minutes south of Cupertino.
Meebo, AJAX, and the Playstation Portable
The latest buzzword technology does indeed do some cool things, as in the example of Meebo, a web-based IM client.

Since my PSP has a browser and I can check Gmail and Flickr and such with it, I figure, how about just bookmarking Meebo and logging on to AIM with it? After all, the PSP browser supports Javascript. Just not that much, it seems. Totally incompatible.

So I went over and used Safari and my browser got jacked hard. Of course, Meebo is in alpha and has tremendous possibility, but I can't help thinking of all the stuff that's incompatible with the PSP.

It's not weird for everyday people to have a portable game system in public. And give it a browser and wifi? I don't need to actually take my laptop anywhere. I have mid-level productivity between my phone and my laptop.

What's the PSP, Netscape 4-based I think?
Using Flickr + TagCloud? Here's a hack.
Flickr + TagCloud 'stop words'

If you use TagCloud for decor on your blog like I do (at blog.ericrice.com), you'll need to add certain terms to your cloud's stop word list so things like CSS doesn't show up as a tag.

I kept getting items like 'margin top' or '000000' showing up, which made no sense.
PR University - the power of pen and paper
One of the first things I noticed walking into the PR University room was the ratio of people use pen and paper to notebook computers. Overwhelmingly in favor of the analog.

I already did one panel with Chris from Podcast Alley and Michael from Rock and Roll Geek Show (both podshow companies).

Craig Newmark craigslist) is speaking right now about blogs and such. Craig says he's a nerd... I never really perceived him to be such. He's got a good presentation revolving around blogs and PR.

I'm up later talking about more audio and video stuff in the corporate environment.
