A what-if-I-want-to-DRM-my-work? conversation
This is a rather fascinating anecdote from a guest writer over on Lessig's blog. An artist friend wants to prevent certain access to her work. The dialogue in the comment area is certainly thought-provoking, for both sides of the argument.

Vehicular Resume
I've seen this a few times, starting with Doc Searls' Weblog, so here's mine.

-1956 Dodge Coronet (with the pushbutton transmission... and no, I'm not that old, just that different)
-Chevy Luv pickup (with a fat rollbar so I could take my 4x2 off roading. I was a dork in high school)
-Ford Mustang LX (primer gray with a 108" steel whip for uber-haX0r CB. Still a dork, but with better technology)
-Ford Aspire (no comment)
-Ford Explorer XLT (ditched for minivan)
-Dodge Caravan (ditched because Dodge is stupid and Mercedes is better)
-Mercedes 560 SEC (the one in the accident)
-VW New Beetle (current)
-Mercedes 450 SL (current)

I'm not deleting comment spam just yet
Someone had fun and auto-spammed a couple hundred blog entries here, and someone else posted these huge posts in the comments on various posts. However, after studying some patterns and knowing what's coming up, I've made the executive decision to NOT delete them, yet. The spam will actually *help* me.

I shall name this project "Aikido".
If it works, I shall rename the project "Pwned!"

The guilty pleasure of horsepower
The comparison shopping continues: MINI Cooper S Convertible or Mustang GT Convertible. Two different cars, similar prices, and I adore both for different reasons.

My gut tells me that the MINI Cooper will win. I love small cars and I virtually live in the mountains with gnarly, windy, hairpin-turn roads with magnificent oak and eucalyptus lining the edges of the hills and ravines. Four-wheel indie suspension, and a ton of options from the dealer like navigation systems and other shiny shiny stuff that I'd expect from Germany.

And as a rule, we Californians think convertibles are our birthright. I digress.

The other car, the Mustang, I can rent anytime I need to. I can't rent a MINI (that I'm aware of). It's bigger, a hair more practical, and it purrs. even the V6 purrs. It's fun, it's classic, and throws around a little weight. And geez, 0-60 in five point something seconds.

So, here's where my guilt comes in. Josh's better half loaned us her Chevy Suburban so we could pick up a BBQ for the new house. Her 454 Suburban is one that, when started, sends small children and cute puppies running for dear life.

And yes, while driving it, I feel like I could make anyone run for dear life, and that accented by the growl of the engine, does not bode well for a horsepower-loving, smart-ass, Silicon Valley brat. It's un-PC, it's unhealthy at the pump, and I would never in a million years drive something that could tow my other car. I'd get into trouble. But boy, do I feel like I'm driving the CIA's podcast vehicle, minus the armour, and plus the amazing acceleration (ok don't worry, I'm not laying rubber, but yeah, too fast for being that big).

Which brings me back to the Mustang. I'd have too much fun. I'd send that car sideways (well come on, it's rear-wheel-drive and NOT indie suspension, duh). The MINI on the other hand has a smart grasp of the road... a little-less frat boy and a little more fun. I can't realistically haul anything in either, but that's fine. I commute from time to time and once in a while, roll four deep with the boys (both sets of boys, the kids and the podcast crew).

And I still haven't found a barbecue.
Buy this album: Psyche Origami "is ellipsis"
The last time I remember hearing a couple of songs and buying the WHOLE album, was in Hollywood, CA in 1993. The album was "Republic" by New Order. With the exception of maybe one song, I was (still am) crazy about the whole CD.

Albums like this don't come along often, but when they do, it's a Good Thing. On a recommendation, I checked out some of the 30 second previews on iTunes for an Atlanta-based hip hop group called "Psyche Origami".... I immediately clicked "Buy Album".

I'm game for most any hip-hop and rap you throw at me, although I tend to take a liking to groups that do a great job of blending samples, melodies, strong lyrics, good bass, and a little bit of funk. Past favorites include De La Soul, Black Eyed Peas, Tribe Called Quest, Third Bass, Digital Underground, X-ecutioners, K.V., to name a few.

You can find them at PsycheOrigami.com.

Bonus link: I'm also addicted to Alpha Pup Record's podcast Alternative Hip-Hop Lounge. Check it.
Next Roadshow? San Francisco - Sat, Aug 6 @ 4pm
Steal this video, San Francisco Bay Area folks.

Come out and podcast, videoblog, and drink! The next Podcast and Videoblog Roadshow is in San Francisco, Saturday, 8/6/2005 at the legendary The House of Shields on 39 New Montgomery.

They're opening the doors early at 4pm and will most likely kick us out at 2am (it's the LAW ya know?). Speaking of law, this roadshow is a 21 and older affair... (but don't worry, kids... the Silicon Valley Roadshow is not ;-)

We got some PDF posters that will be coming down the feed for all of you that use iTunes to get the videoblog delivered to you.

And what else? Live music and the entire gang from The Eric Rice Show. Buy Grog a drink before he does his Burning Man duties!

Bloggers, podcasters, videobloggers---- even if you're brand new to the whole thing and you want to meet some of the people that make media happen in the Bay Area and around the world-- this is the event for you.
BTW, Hire Dan Klass for podcast consulting
He's an outlaw! And an addict! (That is sarcasm!)
Double Laziness from the NYTimes
Not only did one writer pass judgement on videoblogging based on one single style of the medium (don't worry, Sarah Boxer, my video response to you is coming), but another one put forth a lazy, misunderstood description of Dan Klass, a comedic podcaster who was sweepingly labeled as an addict. Not a podcast addict, not a media addict. Just an addict. You know, cuz like, his show is called The Bitterest Pill.

CoughFactCoughCheckCoughResearchCoughHumorCough.

Listen to Dan's show. It's top notch stuff. Bitterest Pill. I'm addicted! Call the clinic!
Video: Portland Podcast Roadshow
Sustainable! (That's an inside joke) But the Portland podcaster/vlogger community is no joke. A long history with multimedia, temperate climates, and plenty of nearby tech (and mighty fresh eatin'), Portland has always been a place that I've noticed from afar that seems to be on the early adopter side of the fence. As Tim Germer from Northwest Noise put it, "We already make our own media!"

Greg Hughes also shows off the ThinkPad X41 Tablet PC and shows how to make your handwriting into a font.

Download and watch the footage from Portland, OR. Be sure to visit

Wouldn't it be loverly...?
...if pretty soon you could upload WMV, MOV, 3GP, MPEG, and other video files to your Audioblog.com account and post them to your blog or RSS feed?

That would be pretty loverly.
Can't play nice? Fine. Here's Richard Dreyfus.
Here's to the crazy ones.
The misfits.
The rebels.
The troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They’re not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.
You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them,
disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.

Because they change things.
They push the human race forward.

Maybe they have to be crazy.

While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

Because the people who are crazy enough to think
they can change the world, are the ones who do.
